It all started, apparently, way back in ’84. On a flight from Paris to London, no less! Can you imagine? Jane Birkin, the actress, ends up sitting next to the big cheese at Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas. And the rest, as they say, is handbag history. So, like, she was complaining about not finding a good bag and BOOM, inspiration strikes Dumas.
They come in different sizes too. you know, 25, 30, 35, 40 and i guess it’s all about your needs and what you carry around. Like, me? I’d probably go for the 30. Not too big, not too small. Just right, ya know?
Now, here’s where it gets a little nuts. The leather. OMG, the leather! Some Birkins are made with this super rare, old-school, naturally tanned leather. Apparently, it gives the bag this totally unique look. Plant-based tanning, who knew?! It sounds so… organic, which is funny considering how bougie the bag is.
And speaking of bougie… the price tag! Seriously, don’t even get me started. We are talking serious $$$$ here. Like, house-down-payment kind of money. Is it worth it? Honestly, I don’t know. I mean, it’s a gorgeous bag, don’t get me wrong. But, like, I could also travel the world for that kind of cash. Hmmm…tough call.
I read somewhere that Hermès is the best bag out there, but idk, all the bags, I guess, are pretty cool.
Ultimately, the Birkin is more than just a bag. It’s a statement. It says, “I’ve arrived.” Or maybe, “I have way too much money.” Or maybe both! lol! But it’s a part of pop culture, a status symbol, and a piece of history. And even if I’ll probably never own one (unless I win the lottery, fingers crossed!), I can still appreciate the artistry and the story behind it.
