I mean, you see them in movies, on celebs, and you’re just thinking, “Wow, that’s… a bag.” But it’s *the* bag. The Birkin.
Apparently, the whole thing started on a flight. A flight! Jane Birkin (the actress, duh) was sitting next to the head honcho of Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas, and she was complaining about not having a good bag. Like, her stuff was falling out, or something. (Can’t find the exact details, sorry not sorry, not doing extensive research here.) And BOOM! An idea was born. Or, at least, sketched out.
The thing is, it’s not just a pretty bag. It’s like, an investment. People buy them and then sell them for *more* later. It’s insane. Is it worth it? I dunno. Depends on how much money you’ve got lying around, I guess. Some people spend it on a house, others on a car, and some on… *that* Birkin. To each their own, right?
And the hardware, too. Gold, palladium… all that fancy stuff. I’ve heard people are picky! Also, you gotta be careful, because there are definitely fakes out there. You don’t want to spend all that money and then find out it’s not the real deal. That would be a total buzzkill.
There are so many styles too! Like, I saw seventeen mentioned somewhere. SEVENTEEN! Who even knew? I thought there was just, like, one, maybe two. Different colors, I guess. But seventeen? That’s a lot of bags. I can’t keep track of it.
Honestly, I think part of the appeal is the exclusivity. It’s hard to get your hands on one. You can’t just walk into a store and buy one. You have to, like, have a relationship with the store, or get on a waiting list. It’s all very hush-hush and fancy. Makes you want one even more, doesn’t it? Even if you don’t really *need* a super expensive bag. I bet you it started with a simple need for a bag and evolved into something… well, like this.
